How can I get from Slovenia to Portugal with a bus or train?

I need a cheap (at least cheaper than a flight) way to get from Slovenia (or cities in Austria, Italy or Hungary that are close to Slovenia) to Lisbon or some other city in Portugal.

The German train website is excellent for planning train travel throughout Europe: bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml You’ll need to use the individual country websites to price the trip though. This will be an extremely long trip (38 to 42 hours) with 6 to 7 train changes required. This trip will not be particularly cheap.

You might want to check the following sites for budget flights: skyscanner.net/ and whichbudget.com/en/ You might find something reasonable flying from Ljubljana to Brussels and then to Portugal.
